Women’s History Month: WaveLink, Inc. Recognizes Grace Hopper

Women in History – Grace Hopper (1906-1992)

WaveLink, Inc. proudly commemorates Women’s History Month by recognizing the pioneering contributions of famous women in math and science. This week, we’re highlighting Grace Hopper, who wrote the first computer manual, A Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, in 1946. After teaching mathematics at Vassar, she joined the Naval Reserves and became a lieutenant. She was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance’s Computation Project at Harvard University, where she worked on Mark I, the first large-scale automatic calculator and a predecessor of electronic computers.

WaveLink, Inc. proudly commemorates Women’s History Month by recognizing the pioneering contributions of famous women in math and science. This week, we’re highlighting the achievements of Marie Curie who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911 for isolating pure radium. She, along with husband Pierre, discovered polonium and radium, and won the Nobel Prize for Physics for discovering radioactivity. Her work paved the way for the discovery of artificial radiation and the neutron.

Women in History – Naomi Parker Fraley (1921-2018)

WaveLink, Inc. proudly commemorates Women’s History Month by recognizing the pioneering contributions of famous women in math and science. This week, we’re highlighting Naomi Parker Fraley, famously credited with being the inspiration behind the Rosie the Riveter posters of WWII. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Naomi and her sister Ada joined other women at Alameda Naval Air Station to help repair combat-damaged aircraft. A photographer snapped a picture of Naomi operating an industrial machine in heels, and the rest is history.

WaveLink, Inc. proudly commemorates Women’s History Month by recognizing the pioneering contributions of famous women in math and science. This week, we’re highlighting the achievements of Ada Lovelace, a British mathematician who is considered the first computer programmer. Through her work, she discovered that a computer could follow a sequence of instructions to make complex calculations. The early programming language, Ada, was named after her.
